Haring read a few lessons in this manner, begin to\nteach the names of the letters and the spelling of words, and re\nquire the groups,\n” a man,”\n” the man,” ” a pen,” ” the pen,” to be\nread as a good reader would pronounce single words.\nI. When one of the letters in the combinations ou or on, is\nmarked in the words at the head of the reading exercises, the\nother is silent.\nIf neither is marked, the two letters represent a\ndiphthong.\nAll other unmarked vowels in the vocabularies, when\nin combination, are silent letters.\nIn slate or blackboard work,\nthe silent letters may be canceled.\nIII. WoRD METHOD.-Teach the pupil to identify at sight the\nwords placed at the head of the reading exercises, and to read\nthese exercises without hesitation. Having read a few lessons,\nbegin to teach the names of the letters and the spelling of words,\nIV. WORD METHOD AND PHONIC METHOD COMBINED,- Teach the\npupil to identify words and read sentences, as above.
